Our Story
In the early 1990s, an ex-Navy electrical engineer started a business in rural Pennsylvania designing custom electrical, thermal and acoustic insulation solutions for small components. His goal was pure – to produce a good, quality product and to provide unparalleled customer service. He succeeded! While the products were good, it was the service that left a real mark – before long, the business grew and they came to be regarded as trusted advisors for any question, regarding thermal or acoustical insulation products. Back then, our components were hand-delivered, and every call was answered by a person. Fast-forward almost 28 years and though our products may now be delivered by UPS, our phones are still answered by real, live people.
We’ve learned a lot over the last 28 years – a lot about the acoustic industry, a lot about our customers’ needs and a lot about how we can best bring these two things together. We understand that soundproofing is complicated. We aim to make it simple – for the contractor and the DIY’er alike. We have updated our long-standing goals to include becoming the premier source for soundproofing education and information.
Today we take the same approach to service that we always have – our customers come first, our products are of the highest quality, and we are serious about keeping both things that way. Ourselves? Well, ourselves we don’t take nearly as seriously…so we invite you to look around SoundproofCow.com, and we hope you find your visit mooo-ving.
AMI’s Story
Ami Heifer was born in a pasture in York, PA. Her father was a rodeo bull, believed to be unrideable for the first 5 years of his career. Some say her mom was one of the 3 original cows from the Chick-Fil-A ads, others believe she was the cover model for Aerosmith’s album “Get A Grip”, and while never confirmed there was a longstanding belief that Clarabelle Cow, of certain cartoon fame, was modeled after her likeness. Ami was the oldest of three calves, CeCe and Dee, her twin siblings which were 4 years younger than her. Ami lived a very good life. As a young Holstein she won many first-place ribbons at county and state fairs, but with every win she felt something was missing. Every time she would win a ribbon, her droves of fans would scream and yell in support. When that happened, she always felt as if she wanted something more, she wanted something different. She wanted peace and quiet.
Ami moved from the quiet, rural pastures of the backroads of York to the more bustling city life of Chambersburg, PA. She was motivated to create a business out of giving people the silence and solitude she herself longed for. She found a warehouse, office space and set it up to work in, starting with convoluted foam as her first product. It was a success, there were a lot of people like her, they were looking for peace and quiet. Soon Soundproof Foam was born. It flourished for a while and she added new products to further assist with giving people the silence they were longing for, but something was still missing, and she couldn’t put her hoof on it.
When she showed her parents how successful she had become, they could not understand why she had gone down such a different path. “Are you too good for the rodeo lifestyle?!?” mooed her father. “Are you too good to chew grass and stand around in a pasture dear?” her mother asked. CeCe and Dee would no longer talk to their older sister, the twin sisters were perfectly fine with living their lives as dairy cows, why couldn’t Ami? Ami was a cow, but now she was also the black sheep. Ami knew deep down in her heart this was what was she was supposed to do.
Meanwhile, the company had gone through a couple of different rebranding’s by this point. The argument with her parents had really thrown her for a loop as she continued to try and find out who she was. Soundproof Foam, Acoustic Trade, Marine Foam, she was trying to find a name that fit in with the industry, but she didn’t realize how unique she truly was and wanted to set herself apart. She was a cow, and she needed to embrace that. One day while knocking back a tall glass of milk, Ami came up with an amazing idea. Cows sure do a lot to help people, and they do it in such a simple manner. They are docile creatures that while looking quiet intimidating with their large stature, truly have a gentle nature about them. That is how she approached soundproofing. She had become very knowledgeable about soundproofing by this time and had gotten really great at explaining all of the complexities to those that were buying products from her. She thought to herself, why not name the company Soundproof Cow!
To say the name change was a success was an understatement. Soundproof Cow has soared to great heights. Her parents finally came around to see just how great she is at her job, and it is now a family business, CeCe and Dee are now operating their own small business on the side with Ami, and their herd grows bigger and bigger every day as more people learn that there’s just something about the Cow. Ami hopes that you choose to join the herd as well.
