What Is Vibration Isolation?

Vibration isolation reduces or eliminates sound transmission through a wall by absorbing structural vibration. A vibration isolation system works by decoupling the surface and filling the space with absorptive and dampening materials that stifle vibrations and dissipate the energy. At Soundproof Cow, we produce vibration isolation systems for walls, ceilings, and floors that help to contain or block out noise.

What Are the Best Materials for Vibration Isolation?

The best materials for sound vibration are those capable of absorbing energy when a wall, floor, or ceiling vibrates. Soundproof Cow has a wide range of vibration isolation equipment that you can use when building new walls, renovating a ceiling, or installing floor materials.

isoTRAX® Decoupling Equipment

The isoTRAX® product line features decoupling systems for new walls and ceilings. These systems consist of steel hat channels that connect to the wall studs or floor joists. The channels run horizontally from stud to stud or joist to joist, creating space between drywall layers or between the ceiling and floor joists to reduce sound transmission. Placing vibration isolation pads on the simple mounting brackets or using padded direct-fix brackets can enhance the results by dampening vibrations.

Impact Barrier QT Flooring Underlayment

Impact Barrier QT Flooring Underlayment is a rubber sheet that isolates the subfloor from the outermost flooring material. Installing this vibration-resistant floor underlayment softens the impact of footsteps and other interacting forces.

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound

Green Glue is an adhesive substance that can isolate building materials or affix dampening materials to the back side of a wall, ceiling or floor.

Sound Dampening and Deadening Materials

Our dampening and deadening materials reduce the magnitude of a surface’s vibration, reducing structural vibrations and sound transmission:

Joist Isolators

Floor joist isolators are U-shaped thermoplastic pads that soften the sound transmission between the joists and the subfloor.

Vibration Isolation FAQs

Everything you need to know about vibration isolation as a soundproofing method:

How does passive vibration isolation work?

Passive vibration isolation uses elastic, shock-resistant materials to cushion the connection between two hard surfaces. Materials like floor joist isolators and isolation pads offer passive vibration isolation capabilities.

What is the difference between a vibration absorber and a vibration isolator?

Vibration absorbers prevent vibration by targeting a specific frequency and applying a specific counteracting force. A vibration isolator decouples the vibrating surface and dissipates vibration energy in the new space.

How do vibration isolation pads work?

Vibration isolation pads create a dampening buffer between drywall and metal isolation tracks to dissipate vibration energy, enhancing a wall or ceiling decoupling system’s transmission reduction performance.

What is the difference between vibration isolation and dampening?

Vibration isolation minimizes vibration, while dampening systems dissipate vibration energy. Isolation and dampening can work in tandem to reduce vibrations and dissipate what persists.

I just wanted to let you know that in the end, sealing the air spaces on this door worked just fine and took care of the problem.

I really appreciate you taking so much time to share your expertise with me, and in particular recommending I try the simpler solution before investing in more expensive noise barriers. That is a big credit to you and your business.
